Talk 02

MUSINGS FROM AN OMNIBOLOGIST

My rather quirky hobby

From an early age, I had developed an interest in travelling by public transport, particularly buses. This talk explores the early days which sparked the interest and the ‘solo’ days out I took discovering the delights of our local area.

An offer of a job working for the local bus company was offered when in the 6th Form which was tempting, but which I declined and pursued a career in teaching. I will explain how I managed to combine my work, family life and rather quirky hobby which has now gained the rather grand sounding name of ‘omnibology’!

The final section recalls how I did eventually work ‘on the buses’ and the hobby did become a part-time job. A random purchase of a guide book to the UK plus the discovery of a well known pub-chain took me on new adventures in the UK

Relevant memorabilia will be shown to enhance the contents of the talk.

The talk lasts approximately 45-50 minutes

Omnibology talk in Halifax

For the omnibologist or bus spotter, the fascination with buses typically begins at an early age. It may start with a simple interest in the vehicles themselves – their designs, sizes, and capabilities. As they grow, this fascination deepens, and they begin to explore the vast universe of public transportation. Omnibologists often possess an encyclopedic knowledge of bus routes and networks in their area. They can provide detailed information about routes, schedules, and even the best spots to catch a glimpse of rare buses.

Omnibology as a bus enthusiast is a vibrant and diverse subculture within the world of transportation. These enthusiasts not only celebrate the vehicles themselves but also contribute to the broader conversation about urban planning, sustainability, and the importance of public transportation in our modern cities. Their passion for buses serves as a reminder of the significance of these vehicles in shaping our communities and connecting people from all walks of life. In this talk, Eric Sykes speaks about his passion for buses.
