Talk 03

PIANO LESSON IN THE 1960s

My Musical Journey

The first part of this talk is a bit of social history and describes what life was like living in a cul-de-sac within a tightly knit neighbourhood in Elland, West Yorkshire. I was a regular visitor to a neighbour who owned a traditional upright piano and that was the starting point for my lifelong interest in music.

The next section describes in detail what it was like to have piano tuition from a rather unusual, but successful teacher. When aged 14, one significant ‘note’ changed everything in my musical education and this will be demonstrated on the piano.

The final part will include live performances of selected pieces to demonstrate different styles and there may be an opportunity for the audience to sing along with one of the numbers.

(Please note – I am afraid I will not be able to play any requests, this talk is not necessarily a concert, but has pieces chosen to demonstrate the tuition I received 60 years ago)
